Haven’t been to a Sonny’s in decades but a Mission bbq recently opened near my house and it is always packed. I generally do bbq at home but want to try the Mission’s brisket someday. Supposedly they take care of veterans and first responders.

Never been a fan of Sonny's. They don't seem to be consistent location to location.

Our Sonny’s is good and it’s consistent. Also the wait staff seem to enjoy and appreciate their jobs. A closer Sonny’s actually struggled with consistency and went out of business, so individual franchises can be poor or good depending. We hit Mission BBQ occasionally and like the food. Their location isn’t great for us so Sonny’s wins out most often. We do have a favorite BBQ that we favor but it’s not a chain and isn’t open but three days a week.

It's generic BBQ. It's pretty consistently generic for us. I prefer mine at home, but we eat there for work lunches once in a while. Mission is better, but hit or miss in different locations. None of it is cheap eats anymore.

The original Sonny's that Sonny Tillman opened up in 1968 was not real far from us and we used to ride over to Waldo Road in Gainesville and eat sliced pork and it was always very good until it was sold and became corporate, I had about 3 bad experiences in a row and have not been back.

Mission BBq doesn’t have any smoke coming from the back of the building. I’ve always questioned that.

Back in the 80s I ate lunch at Sonny's 3 or 4 days a week. $5 for lunch was a deal.
I haven't been to Sonny's since Sonny sold the place and it went to hell.

I thought Sonny still owned the one on Waldo Rd. Nope, Sonny sold that one way back in 2011 or 2012. His daughter owned the one in Hawthorne, but she dropped the Sonny's franchise. it is now Dianne's Old Time Barbeque

Sonny Tillman is a true gentleman. He sold his business years ago and only still owns the one in Gainesville and in Alachua. Both are on 441. Dustin's BBQ is his nephew. All BBQ restaurants are pale compared to BBQ done at home or on the side of the road. Sweet Meat in High Springs is super legit. John and Crystal are competition BBQ'ers and they also have a meat market and vegetable stand. I stop there every time I am in High Springs. They are on 441 next to Prime Conduit. I also stop by the black lady on 441 next to Love's Gas station just north of 75 that has the produce stand. Best tomato's ever. Sonny was in a hunting camp in Hog Valley years ago on the Ocklawaha River/Rodman Reservior. He built a brick open pit that had an expanded metal grill that was on a pole that had teeth on it and a wheel so you could raise and lower the grate. Some of the best dove hunts I have ever been a part of was on his farm in High Springs on 41.

I think Mission makes all their stuff in a central location and sends it out. I find it meh, as well as Sonnys. The good pitmasters around here are very small operations, and they sell at a high price. Rather make it at home. Doing a butt and just finished a salmon for this weekends festivities.
