Sonny Tillman is a true gentleman. He sold his business years ago and only still owns the one in Gainesville and in Alachua. Both are on 441. Dustin's BBQ is his nephew. All BBQ restaurants are pale compared to BBQ done at home or on the side of the road. Sweet Meat in High Springs is super legit. John and Crystal are competition BBQ'ers and they also have a meat market and vegetable stand. I stop there every time I am in High Springs. They are on 441 next to Prime Conduit. I also stop by the black lady on 441 next to Love's Gas station just north of 75 that has the produce stand. Best tomato's ever. Sonny was in a hunting camp in Hog Valley years ago on the Ocklawaha River/Rodman Reservior. He built a brick open pit that had an expanded metal grill that was on a pole that had teeth on it and a wheel so you could raise and lower the grate. Some of the best dove hunts I have ever been a part of was on his farm in High Springs on 41. L believe you are wrong about him still owning either of the locations that you mentioned, I'm pretty confident that both of those are corporate.

I never figured out the big deal about Satchels. Agreed, reeks of snotty hipster vibe.

I guess a fellow could always go around the corner to Satchel's, LOL, seriously I have worked all over the place and have seen " Satch Says" and "Follow me to Satchel's " bumper stickers in New Jersey, Maryland, South Carolina, Kentucky and a few others I guess because of UF students. We did Satchel’s once when my kids were little, they liked it. Pizza was average, I’m a pizza snob. I have never ate at Satchel's, I came close one time when we were working right there close but they didn't have any tables available and wanted us to eat out front in the VW bus with some catheads and hippies with it about 100 degrees out, I told the boys that we was going to Sonny's, that's as close as I ever got.

I never had a meal at satchels, I understand him to be a good person that treats his employees exceptionally well. I ate Sonny's for many years in Alachua back in the 80’s-90’s. Went to high school with one of his daughters.( that is a different story) They had good bbq until they cooked off site. IMHO The place in Hawthorne is owned by another one of his daughters, she wanted to offer other (or different) things on the menu. She had to drop the “name” to do it. It’s a nice local spot to enjoy ( for locals😉). And that is all I have to say about that.

Mission BBq doesn’t have any smoke coming from the back of the building. I’ve always questioned that. Google Alto Shaam ovens. Basically self contained. That’s not barbecue. You use an open pit and real wood. Period.

When I was a kid we would stop and eat at the Sonny's on Waldo Road coming home from UF games. My gf and I used to stop at Sonny's all the time during road trips around the state, but that was for the salad bar. The beans used to be good many years ago. Once they got rid of their salad bar they lost me as a customer.

Pearls on 441 in Micanopy is good bbq Pearls is better than most around here but, man it was sooo much better when Big Jim first started it. I use to stop for breakfast often too, then Miss Sharron retired and the place just isn’t the same. One chick that is/was working there needs to be punched in the throat ( I like most everyone else though 😇).

If you are ever in St. Johns County on State Road 13 try Woodpeckers on the corner of 210. Good BBQ.

All chains are meh IMO, at best. Haven’t found one I like more than homemade in Tampa, but Wicked Oak isn’t bad. Had to drive through Williston the other day and had a sandwich at Frog’s and it was pretty good.

Adams Rib in Gainesville has got to be the worst. One of our employees had lunch delivered last week, I literally ask him to take it outside to the picnic table. I don’t know how anyone can eat that foul smelling crap.

I don’t know how anyone can eat that foul smelling crap. Haven't eaten there in years. Was delivering to them when they first opened in the old DunkinDonuts on 13th. We have used Hills for large catering events and everybody seemed satisfied.

Hills is excellent. Best catered BBQ you can get. I haven't had Adams in several months, but their food has always been delicious when I got it. David's is also good BBQ.

I usually get Jack Daniels Pulled Pork in the box from WalMart. Works for me after a couple beers. Nuke it for 3 minutes and get out the buns and sliced onion. My needs are simple because my thoughts are Pure..
