So I had to drive to West Palm today to visit with some clients tonight and tomorrow, and I got pulled over by FHP on the Turnpike and got a ticket for having too dark of tint on my back windows. I thought it was just the front windows you couldn't have it on, anyone know for sure? I even tried to play my truck got totaled in Helene along with my house (all true), but he did not seems to care in the least. Can't catch a break.

Not sure what the law is. There’s a small town in east Alabama that we roll all the windows down as we hit the town limits. They ticketed us once. They operate their stakeouts like the old “speed traps” as money makers.

I texted my wife what happened who just so happened to be at the dermatologist and mentioned it to the doctor who promptly wrote me a letter saying I need the dark tint for a skin condition. Will see if that gets me out of it, but if not at least I’ll have it in the truck going forward in case I ever get asked about it again in the future. Granted I drive from the front seat and the limo tint is only on the backseats so kind of a hard argument to make 🤣

Tint tickets are petty bullshit. Just want to see if you’re sketchy and write the ticket for good measure when you aren’t.

Years ago as we were driving to the coast my son got a ticket for tinted windows in Blountstown.
I think the ordinances vary between municipalities

Tint laws are nothing more than revenue collections. You can ride around with FJB (spelled out) and all kinds of language not appropriate for public display and children but tint is the line in the sand? GTFOOH

The law is based on the amount of light it lets through and reflects. Back windows can be darker than front windows. All the windows on my truck are at the max allowed by law.
Did he use a light meter? If not, how did he know you were illegal?
I think limo tint is legal on back side windows. You can't see inside my rear windows and I know they are legal.

I like tint but it sure makes backing up at night difficult and no I don't have a backup camera in my f-350 roadtrip truck.

Its BS , cargo van has no visibility into the cab. Why should anyone be penalized for having a rear windshield?
What about these trucks that have full rear window art piece wraps like and an American flag or a whitetail deer scene?

In todays world, I can see where a LEO would like to see inside a vehicle if possible.

When I get pulled over I roll down all my windows so there is no argument that they can't see in. They are probably looking for someone that has the same truck that you have. It is stick bull stuff. My truck has it but it came with it and I have to lower them to back my boats in at night.

Front windows must be no more than 25% and rear windows 15% and no tint past the AS1 line on the front windshield. As a LEO I agree it is a petty ticket that for me is a ticket I think I have written less than 5 times in 21 years. If he did not put a tint meter on your window and did not write on the citation what the percentage was then contest it in court and you will beat it.

I can surely see why a LEO would not like to approach a vehicle that they can’t see inside. This is a very different world we live in now.
I don’t like window tint myself. But I never wear sun glasses either. Only rarely does sun bother my eyes

316.2953 Side windows; restrictions on sunscreening material.—A person shall not operate any motor vehicle on any public highway, road, or street on which vehicle the side wings and side windows on either side forward of or adjacent to the operator’s seat are composed of, covered by, or treated with any sunscreening material or other product or covering which has the effect of making the window nontransparent or which would alter the window’s color, increase its reflectivity, or reduce its light transmittance, except as expressly permitted by this section. A sunscreening material is authorized for such windows if, when applied to and tested on the glass of such windows on the specific motor vehicle, the material has a total solar reflectance of visible light of not more than 25 percent as measured on the nonfilm side and a light transmittance of at least 28 percent in the visible light range. A violation of this section is a noncriminal traffic infraction, punishable as a nonmoving violation as provided in chapter 318. History.—s. 1, ch. 84-296; s. 1, ch. 91-42; s. 209, ch. 99-248.

It would be helpful to see the entire citation.
Which states statute is this excerpt from?

What about these trucks that have full rear window art piece wraps like and an American flag or a whitetail deer scene? Exactly. Plenty of vehicles have no back windows at all. Is that "too dark"?

I hate vehicles with the full tint. You can’t see the driver. And yes that does make a difference especially in city driving. I also notice that cars with tinted windows are normally the dummies driving with no lights on after dark or no headlights on in the rain or fog. One other hint, take those license plate frames off. That’s a sure way to get pulled over if a cop needs an excuse. 😉

Since my cataract surgery I have noticed sunlight bothers me more. But my old glasses were tinted so that might be it
Between skin cancers and eye damage it can cause, all my vehicles get window tint and I always wear sunglasses.

Here is the ticket. I think I could easily beat it as he did NOT put a meter on it. I also have a doctor's letter saying I need, as well as a receipt from when I got it that it is indeed 25% so he was wrong. That said, I don't plan on going back that way anytime soon and I'm not going to drive from Tampa to Fort Pierce to fight at $116 ticket, my time is way more valuable than that even though I really want to out of principal. If I didn't just get trashed by 2 hurricanes my outlook on that may be different, but just isn't in me right now as I have bigger fish to fry.

He wrote it up for your rear side windows, not your driver side windows. You can pretty much black out the rear windows. I think the only caveat on blackout in the back is you have to have working side rear view mirrors, which almost everyone does.
