Anyone know what type of berry this is? I’m thinking persimmon or jacoticaba. Deer or hog seemed to be on them. I hung a camera so time will tell.  |

Put a plant id app on your phone, take a picture and it tells you what it is. It's pretty accurate.

A friend found cherry laurel in Alabama and the deer were tearing it up.

I just googled it and yes the main consensus, was that it is mildly toxic on most sites. One site said that it was edible by birds, small mammals and deer.
I know the one my friend found in Alabama was heavily fed upon, there were no berries that could be reached by the deer.

Not gallberry.
It's on a small tree/ large gangly sort of bush. Close to water, or at least in very wet flatwoods........??

Not gallberry. It's on a small tree/ large gangly sort of bush. Close to water, or at least in very wet flatwoods........?? Found a couple small trees and 2 trees 20-30 ft high that are loaded and dropping them heavy. Saw lots of freshly opened pits on the ground. It’s southwest of okeechobee, mixed habitat. Wet open prairies some pine and oak hammocks. Had 3 deer feeding on them on a camera I set this morning.👍 |

Cherry laurel would have been bitter and astringent, but it sure looks like cherry laurel.

The other candidate I came up with is the wild black cherry but it has leaves with small serrations and grows mostly on higher hammocks.
I do know that deer feed heavily on black cherries but they drop to early in my area(NC FL) to hunt over.
Hope you have good luck hunting on the trees you found regardless of what they are and thanks for sharing with the rest of us, it may help out putting part of the puzzle together that we call hunting.

I thought of what maybe a cool topic. When anybody finds a food source, like you did, take a picture of it and share on this site, might be fun and informational.
Hopefully some of the more "experienced" hunters won't consider it some sort of "spot burning".

By Googling on my iPhone it came back as Gallberry, which grows in coastal plains from Florida to Canadian provinces. During the Civil War Confederate soldiers used the berries as a coffee substitute but low in caffeine.
