www.wfla.com/news/florida/businesses-catch-fire-on-cedar-keys-iconic-dock-street/ CEDAR KEY, Fla. (WFLA) — Multiple businesses caught fire on Dock Street in Cedar Key early Thursday morning. According to a post on the Cedar Key Welcome Center’s Facebook page, Duncan’s on the Gulf, which has been closed since Hurricane Idalia in 2023, burnt down. The neighboring businesses, Steamers Bar and Grill and the Rusty Hook Bait Shop, were damaged, but the extent of that damage is not known. The fire broke out at around 5:15 a.m., according to WCJB-TV. The outlet spoke with Cedar Key Mayor Sue Colson, who said one of the businesses recently reported electrical issues. No injuries have been reported.

What a cool place, it's been a couple years since I visited there. Fortunately no one was hurt.

My girlfriend sent me pictures and a video of this earlier. Cedar Key has been one of my favorite places to go for over 25 years. Coconuts and the Rusty Rim burnt down years ago. I have been to Duncans 3 or 4 times but couldn't tell you how many times I've been to Steamers or Frogs back in the day. What a shame.

We’ve been there for a couple of getaways. I’m amazed it didn’t burn a lot more of those businesses up. Not entirely sure where the fire was, but if had gotten on that pier…. I took another look. It was on that pier. OMG that they contained it.

That sucks, Even if rebuilding is a option the new building codes make it extremely more expensive,

Nice place to visit ... haven't been there since before covid ... relaxed pace.
( one thing wasn't relaxed then ... the price of real estate ... ouch! )
If the "government mandated pier" was to crumble, so much the better.
Worst fishing pier in the entere state thanks to the silted-in channel.
Not a bad walk, you can catch some sunshine there, but fish have gone missing.

The video my girlfriend sent me showed a blazing fire. I'm really surprised they were able to contain it. All the wood framed structures with no fire walls between them. When Coconuts and the Rusty Rim burned, due to the more stringent building codes (like was mentioned) the owners couldn't afford to build them back.

It really is amazing they were able to stop it.
If it's not fraud, it's probably the best thing at could have happened to the owner considering. A shame to the neighboring businesses that were operating though.

Having the fire station about 200 yards away definitely helped.

not to many locals left in CK, most sold out and moved to Sumner and Rosewood to escape the woke yankee hoards that took over.

If they rebuild, which will cost a fortune, it'll end up looking the the key west 3 story vacation rentals sitting on 1st street by the bridge.

Insurance lightning strike?🤔 Cedar Key died decades ago. My guess is what you're thinking. Insurance in this case, didn't seem to be warranted.....

When a tragic event is also the best case scenario for the affected parties, it's generally suspicious.

When a tragic event is also the best case scenario for the affected parties, it's generally suspicious. Long, long ago, like 40+ years ago, there was a fire in Boca Grande. The original Millers Marina burned. Amazingly, the new owner built a new Millers Marina, on the very foundation of the ruins. I'm thinking most of us still alive, will take the truth to our graves.

Even if the investigators find arson, unless they have video evidence or eyewitnesses it’s hard to pin on the owner.

We enjoy Cedar Key - sux that it happened.
First thing I thought was make way for some big modern buildings. Gonna lose some old-FL charm in all this.

Cedar key has changed somewhat over the years, but not very much. The people have.... yes. Not too many physical changes from the 3rd street to Dock Street area. That is part of the appeal. The fact there is nothing to do in Cedar key (besides fish, eat, & drink) it became my go to place to do nothing. That and the girlfriend loves it.

The code & zoning issues were part of the problem with rebuilding the Rusty Rim & Coconuts. The fact that the buildings are on pilings out over the water. I believe I heard you could rebuild the existing structure because they were grandfathered but new structures could not be built.
