We have a VR that barely gets used. Me and the boy have been working through a Super Nintendo emulator. Don’t sleep on Donkey Kong country 2. Great side scroll game. Also been working through some OG Tomb Raider. Great first person shooter/puzzle. Lately I likely don’t game for more than 1-2 hours a week. When I do, its almost always either an emulated retro game or a modern game done in retro style. For a while I was enjoying the PS5 upgraded version of Fallout 4, but then I got tired of it. Last two weekends I’ve tried to get into Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and cannot. I don’t like the build mechanic. Its also pushing the Switch to the graphical max and I can no longer stand sub-60fps gaming for modern games. When the PS5 Pro comes out this fall, I’m going to jump on it with a VR2. I only recently got a quality 4k TV and 4k gaming at 60fps or higher is where its at.

Me and the boy agree that Zelda-Call of the wild might be one of the best games ever made. I too don’t enjoy the building dynamic but it has seemed to leech into many of the new games. We are rolling with a Switch and a PS5. Son built a bad ass gaming computer for Halo. That’s beyond me.

What blew me away about CotW was that it looked like how pictures of The Legend of Zelda were drawn in the 1980s. Such as images from the game’s instruction manual that had a lot of lore in it. I could imagine the original designer of the first Zelda game seeing BotW and and agreeing this is what his vision for Hyrule was. The technology of the day simply couldn’t achieve it.

After reading these posts I’m damn glad I grew up playing Monopoly, chess and other board games. Not to mention all the hunting and fishing. 😁

i'm kinda with Johnny on this one. Can't believe middle-aged guys are discussing video games. I can understand playing with your kids, but a couple of you seemed to be really into it.

The guys here that are playing video games seem to be well rounded, good jobs, enjoy outdoors activities, spend time with family, etc. I personally don't play any kind of games not even board games. But, I don't see it as any different than me spending time watching mindless youtube videos or instagram posts of people fishing or cooking or any number of things. Like any of that it's just an activity for them to get away from the every day hustle of life. To each his own..

I understand what you are saying, but video games are for kids, in my opinion, like when we played cowboys and indians as kids. Would you not think it just a little odd if a middle aged man was playing cowboys and indians because he was into it?

I just don’t have time for anything else other than typing on my phone while I am waiting for something. I’m just getting used to sleeping more and it cuts into my productive time

The only difference between a good R-rated movie that has a good plot and a good Mature rated video game is that you advance the story by your own choices and actions when you play it in a game format.

Back in the 80’s I was pretty good at Tank Attack and Missle Command. But I still preferred pinball. 👍 By the way, there is an arcade downtown Panama City and it has a bunch of old pinball machines. The kids are lined up waiting to play one!😂

How many of you have young children (17 and younger) or grandkids that are allowed to play video games such as Mortal Kombat, Manhunt 2, Grand Theft Auto, Postal, et al.? Have you ever paid attention to idle chatter amongst them and their peers regarding these games? I do. He never got into those Mostly the sports ones.

Video game industry makes more money than the movie industry. Indeed. And most of that revenue now comes from the mobile gaming market. Most people now have in their pockets gaming systems far more powerful than most dedicated game systems via their smart phones.

I was in the coin operated amusement business for a couple of years. I had 30 pinball machines. Wish I still had them. It was Ms Pac Man that made me the most money. People could sit and play all damn night. and when the welfare checks came out I'd have to empty the machines every day.

Yeah but you can’t shake and kick the phone like you could the arcade machine and not spill your beer. 😉

Yeah but you can’t shake and kick the phone like you could the arcade machine and not spill your beer. 😉 You’re right. The reason dedicated video game systems still persist is because people like me who grew up with them are used to holding a controller in the hand and playing on the living room TV. I play very few games on my phone. PCs are actually the elite gaming system of choice because they can be constantly tweaked and upgraded. But I still prefer a console gaming system on the TV.

I played the pinball machines when I was a kid. There was one in a service station that was a nickle to play. Only one I ever saw. Most were a dime or 3 games for a quarter. The local bowling alley had a line of them. I'd go in there and play them. My mom could smell the cigarette smoke in my shirt that was a whipping. We weren't allowed to go in the bowling alley.

Sometime around 1964 I went into a pool hall that was in the basement of a large building. The pool hall had an entrance one street and it extended all the way to the other street.
You could not see the last few tables because the cigarette smoke was so think.
Lot's of tables and they were all humming.
I've only seen smoke that thick in one other place. A conference room that was packed and you could barely see the speaker. That was in Innsbruck Austria. I was just walking by and was astounded at the smoke.
