I have a very good 225 Johnson hanging on a boat. I have created a problem for myself.
I haven’t started it or turned it over for 11 years. I’m thinking of squirting trans fluid in the cylinders and letting it soak for a while before I even try to turn it over. Does anyone know of another product or method to do prior to starting the motor again?
I know I should not have left it sitting so long but life has been very busy and it is 20 miles away in storage.
I can use the motor on another boat now. The boat it is hanging on has gotten soft from sitting out so it will be scraped.

See if you can turn it over by hand. Marvel mystery oil is good. 2 stroke or 4 ?

I have a 60 yamaha 4 stroke that hasent been started in 2-3 years, I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to put a little in each cylinder & turn by hand or bump the starter?

Marvel mystery oil. We used it to pickle engines on boats we recovered/salvaged when I worked for SeaTow Yep, used it many times in the old days on old frozen car motors. Squirt it in and let it sit for a few days, then squirt some more in and hand turn it. If it was a car engine, you would use a socket and breaker bar on the crankshaft bolt to get it the move. You want it to move just a little at a time back and forth, squirting a little oil in as it gets loose. Be sure to change the oil before running it. I've also heard of people mixing ATF with acetone to break loose a stuck engine, never tried it.

The motor haven run since I had it serviced, basic tune up. Plugs oil & shift cables. I'd hate to foul plugs & change fresh oil, any other suggestions, maybe 3in1 oil? Or 2 stroke oil?

If it's a 2 stroke I would look into fogging or misting it with a lube. reed valves, bearing cages all the fun stuff that never sees oil like a 4 stroke does.

Marvel Mystery Oil, turn by hand with sparkplugs out, If it turns freely, then leave the sparkplugs out and turn with starter ( little 2 or 3 second bursts) several times ( it's going to make a mess, blowing that Mystery oil out), plugs back in, remove ignition or coil wire so it won't crank, spin the engine several times to lube up the internals, hook everything back up, get some fresh fuel and see if she'll crank.

Good luck with the 225 Johnson, I've owned two 6 cylinder OMC motors. I also had 3 blown power heads and god knows how many lower units with them. There is a reason they are out of business today.

When I was in a different era, a neighbor had an old 2 stroke, stacked 6 Mercury engine in his garage. 115 HP.
It had been setting for God only knows how long. I took it and went to the local marine shop to get some answers. Basically the info above was what an old mechanic there told me to do.
Well, I got it running and found an old 15 ft glass boat to put it on. (found out later it was only rated to 75 HP).
That engine was a pain in the ass to get cranked. Once you got it going, you didn't shut it down. But it would haul ass on that cheap, lightweight boat. Chine walking fast.
I'm surprised it never flipped.

On the flip side, I went through 3 V4 OMC motors and they were bullet proof. I ran them in horrible conditions, mud,grass,logs, and blew one head gasket, one stator, and a fuel pump in about 10 yrs of work. Great motors.

Moved on to Yamaha and Suzuki, been good so far! I gave in to pressure from a bunch of folks and bought a pair of F225 Yamahas instead of repowering with Evinrude 2 strokes back in 2002. The Yamahas were in the shop 12 times in the first 6 months. Came back from West End on with only one running once. Got to come in Haulover at night against an out going tide and about 10-12 NE winds. The problem was when you shut them off, one or the other wouldn't start back up. They would turn over fine, just not start. Luckily they never did it at the same time. They wouldn't show a code because they weren't running. I bought them at Lentine Marine and they tried everything they could think of to find out what was causing it. Yamaha Customer service didn't do crap for me. I finally found out what was wrong when Tec (some of you might remember him from FS) told me what the issue was. He was fished with some guys that had the same motors on their SKA boat. Turns out the computer modules were defective. Yamaha knew about it, but no recall or even a notice to their dealers on it was ever sent out. I ran them a couple years after that, they came no where near the performance that the Merc EFI's that were on it did. Sold the boat to a guy that worked for me, and a couple years later he had to change both lowers after they corroded into a pile of rust. No warranty on that issue from Yamaha. That crap put them at the bottom of the list for me. I had one more, a 90 2/S on a skiff that ran great, but still haven't changed my mind on them. Edit: One other thing. The 2/s Rudes would have cost me $4500.00 less, and way less on labor to mount than the Yamahas did. I guarantee the boat would have performed better in every way but fuel burn. The savings would have way more made up on what the extra fuel cost. It had two 150 tanks and a single 50 gallon one so plenty of range to anywhere i would have been with it in the Bahamas also.
