I'm scouting year round really but if I was to pick a start time, then I would say I like to get some cameras into the woods in June. I'll pull the cards around the start of archery to get an idea of the specific routes of travel in the area. Then it's just spot scouting to fine tune as we approach general Gun. I typically hunt a WMA with a very late rut (XMAS/NYE), so the time lines there are a bit different then the rest of the state.

I start about 6-8 weeks before my quota permit. Setting a few cameras in busy areas and slowly circling the drain. The deer do not tolerate human scent and dont come back once they smell it the 2nd time.
Not near as good as the guys who grew up hunting down here but have seen deer on the last 3 hunts ive drawn. Even got a small buck last yr ML.
Hoping to continue on the trend.

Year round I’m scouting. Especially during turkey and small game on non quota areas. I’ll hang some cameras after the quota permits are revealed. Now that we have a spot burner forum I hope to do a little less scouting!😜

I'm only serious about turkey. Have cameras running year around on private. If drawn for a quota hunt will start after deer and small game seasons end.

I scout year round, but right now the yellow flys are mid-evil and thick.

I scout midweek when the wma's are empty a week before the hunt starts. I usually follow ribbon trails and check sd cards I find in the woods. these new cell cameras make it tough

I do the same with water and shade. Regardless, I'm not busting a gut or dropping a nut for a deer anymore. I don't mind working for it, but I'm gonna work smarter, not harder.

I favor hunting in the shade as well. Dehydration is a serious issue. I try to always keep a bottle or two when walking. What’s interesting is we never carried water with us in the 60s/70s and never seemed to get dehydrated. Were we tougher, dumber or what?

Were we tougher, dumber or what? All both of em? I never drank water and worked in my Dads orange groves during the summer.
