I think most of us appreciate the outdoors no matter where it is. Thanks for sharing. That is why I don’t care to visit Islands anymore. I grew up with coconut trees and sand. If I ever go on a cruise it will be Alaska or Norway.

that indian store room looked interesting You run into that stuff in the damnedest places....all over this country. There must've been a huge population here, 1,000 years ago. Mostly small store rooms, smaller than that one. There's an old dwelling right behind that, that some fools have vandalized. It takes considerable effort to access - that one's over a mile into solid, untracked wilderness, much of it a brush-busting, rock-crawling chance. You'd think people who go to that effort would be more appreciative.

Really interesting. You’ve really made a heck of a transition from there to Florida lowlands, and back to the west and mountains. I take my hat off to you sir.

Sigh....yah, thanks, but I think I kinda shot myself in the foot on this one. When I got back here - 1½ years ago, already - I was looking forward to my old love of hiking/climbing in the mountains. Turns out I can't anymore. Not sure if the heart surgery pulled me down or what, but in Jan. '03 - 1½ years ago; less than 3 months after open heart surgery - I climbed Gomez Peak near here. 4 miles round trip with 800 ft elevation gain. I was hurting some, moderately, when done, but I did do it. I've done many, many 2 - 4 mile hikes since and can't seem to progress. 2 miles is fine; 3 miles I'm starting in on the pain and 4 miles has me totally thrashed and resting/groaning every couple 100 ft. I did 80 Mountain, adjacent to Gomez Peak about 1½ months ago - 4½ mile round trip with 1,000 ft elevation gain and it nearly ruined me. I seriously thought I'd hafta call for help...legs just didn't want to carry me anymore and pain level was intense. Sooo....can't do no mo' what I used to do with pleasure and success, so what do I do now ?? In FL I had my boat and loved playing on the Withlacoochee River. Coming back isn't possible now and I can't afford the higher rents anyway. BooHoo...sob sob...call me a waaambulance. Why couldn't I have been born rich instead of so damned good looking ??

Reading your stories over the last 8-9 years. You’ve had a lot more adventures than 95% percent of America. Plus not many can rock a Speedo😉. Enjoy the holiday sir. Looking forward to the next adventure.

Do you ever explore any old mines? There's one old mine about 40 miles east of here that has a lot of Pyrite crystals. I went there 5 or 6 years ago with my friend "Prospector Dave" to look for some and we went in about 150 - 200 feet. Found lots of crystals. It's cut thru solid rock and seems stable enuf, but I was still very spooky - I'm mildly claustrophobic. Then I nearly got lost in a side tunnel on the way back out and Dave had to correct me. Many other mines all over this country, but most look pretty sketchy and I don't trust them. If there was a cave-in caused by my activity, it'd be instant death.

Looking forward to the next adventure. Whole raft of thoughts come to mind over this'n. Mainly that when on trips I stay out for months at a time and I'm not shy about asking locals what's interesting about their area. Most are eager to show off the local attractions. Going online helps a lot, too, but you hafta learn what to ask for. A good example is the Bisti Badlands up near Farmington, NM, about 300 miles north of here. I went thru a part of it about 15 years ago and was blown away by the radical scenery. Now, on YouTube, I see where I missed nearly all of it - and the best parts, to boot. One of my favorite areas - in spite of the Grizzly Bear population (I'm terrified of the things) is the area around Smithers, B.C. and nearby Babine Lake - the western terminus of the old Hudson's Bay Company fur trading empire. I covered miles and miles of back roads and loved it there. Haha....Babine Lake and the little community of Granisle are a great example, too. When launching my boat to go and try for a Lake Trout (Char) a guy drove up and started a conversation. Turned out he was the maintenance man for the local school and loved to fish. He gave me explicit, detailed instructions of where and how to go about it and away I went. An hour or so later, I was doing as he'd instructed (with no joy) and here he came in his own boat to check up on me and make sure I was going about it properly. Pretty hard to beat that....but I still haven't caught a Laker. In Port Alberni, B.C., I'd been out on my boat trolling for King Salmon with no joy and had loaded my boat on trailer when a younger fella with his young son on board couldn't stand that I'd been skunked and took me aboard his boat and taught me how to jig for Salmon. We spent several hours and had a great time....but I still haven't caught a Salmon by jigging. There's some very nice people out there.....and some real assholes, too. Then one day I was on Google Earth looking for something in that area and noticed the little photo flags on the page, so clicked on some of them. It was amazing, how much I had missed....and I kick my butt for not being more thorough.
