"DETROIT (AP) — Ford is recalling more than 550,000 pickup trucks in the U.S. because the transmissions can unexpectedly downshift to first gear no matter how fast the trucks are going." "The recall covers certain F-150 pickups from the 2014 model year. Ford's F-Series pickups are the top-selling vehicles in the U.S." "Ford says in documents posted Tuesday by U.S. safety regulators that the downshifting can cause drivers to lose control of the trucks, increasing the risk of a crash." "The recalls come after U.S. auto safety regulators in March began investigating complaints that more than 540,000 Ford pickup trucks from 2014 can abruptly downshift to a lower gear and increase the risk of a crash." "Documents say the problem is caused by a lost signal between a transmission speed sensor and the powertrain control computer. There also could be corrosion and problems with connector pins." "Dealers will update the powertrain control software at no cost to owners, who will be notified by letters in early July." "Ford's statement said that before the trucks downshift, drivers could see a malfunction indicator light on the dashboard. In some cases, signals can be restored while the trucks are moving, and they can be driven normally. In other cases drivers may need to stop and restart the engine to get the transmissions to work properly." Interesting, we have been replacing the lead frames on these for years for this very reason. Reprogramming wasnt the fix.. There were times especially during covid we could not get the parts from the dealer as there customers came first. We were ordering off of ebay.

So, my question is this. If it is a lost signal between speed sensor, or transmission control module to power train control module, how will a software reflash fix that? When I had similar issues in the Yukon it was the module in the transmission..

So, my question is this. If it is a lost signal between speed sensor, or transmission control module to power train control module, how will a software reflash fix that? When I had similar issues in the Yukon it was the module in the transmission..

Thats why i am questioning. The Lead frame houses the PRNDL, Input and output speed sensor.

Sure dorman will gladly send us another unit but we eat the labor. Dropping valve body labor and eating 9 quarts of tranny fluid isnt profitable the second go around.

What's even worse is all the chinese names i never heard of and most of them look like the exact same part. I think some chinese company is making auto parts under ten different brand names. What is a good brand for a HEI distributor and coil? Are the ones with the coil on the cap any good?

Parts are a crap shoot these days. So many come from the same foreign manufacturer under different names. All the old stand by's have gone overseas.

Module went out on 07 yukon, after it had been replaced. Took it back and the guy ate the labor on it to replace it. Took a while to get it back and some miscreant stole the tag off it, so he gave me the replacement cost for that.. I needed to be a diffrent dwarf when I picked it up, I wasn't Happy. I don't think he made any money on that deal.. luck of the draw on parts.
Now as far as map sensors on the tree fiddly motorcraft..I didn't have as good luck with non oem..
About every oil change it needs cleaned it seems. (It's on a small spacer as well)

Ford was 8 months back ordered and 13,000 pieces short. Dorman, ebay for $600, or park your truck. I went Dorman. 60k miles in with zero problems.

Yes they are fine AC delco or MSD And yes tons of shitty parts especially on amazon.

Just 2014 models?
Had to replace my 2013 F150 transmission, transfercase, wiring pack and computer crap back in 2018 because this happened to me while I was in 4 wheel drive. It completely ripped the transfer case to pieces and the transmission was just as bad.
It had just ran out of warranty and Ford wouldn’t lift a finger.

IMHO 10 year old trucks shouldn’t be having these high dollar issues. I hate hearing this about the # 1 selling vehicle in the US

A few years ago, out in the S. Illinois empire of corn & beans, a good ol' boy retired.
Reclaimed a fine patch of ground, had creeks and a few ponds, built a lake.
It turned out that a relative passed and left an odd piece of land.
The state needed it for a highway on or off ramp and paid top dollar.
He treated himself to a new F-150 ... a family tradition.
Since he has kin all over the area, they have all the specialty Ford tools.
( which I never knew existed. )
Well, he picked up the new truck and drove it for several days.
The "check engine" light had come on, but he ignored it.
Went to the dealer ... they couldn't fix it ... gave him a Chevy Silverado to drive.
He drove that for a few weeks, and began to like it, while the dealer went nuts.
Day after day the techs poked and prodded, measured and re-checked.
They finally figured out the problem ... it went all the way back to the factory.
The shiny new Ford truck had been delivered with the Wrong Wiring Harness!
I'll have to alert him to this recall.
