Kid just dip netted a juvenile kite bird out of the lake. Neck damage but not bad. He is sitting on my wife’s shoulder in the yard. trying to find a rehab with no luck. I’d like to help it.

This is good advice.... I was just told by a rehabber in South Florida, that UF takes wild birds and rehab them....... They may even be able to keep you in the loop as far as the birds progress and rehab status.

They will if you want. They asked me if I wanted to know the progress and track the birds recovery. I told them no, I just wanted it in good hands.

Johnny, Talked to Joe at sunrise rehab for 45 minutes. That guy is “rockstar “ qualified. The bird is in our spare room, covered giant extra dog kennel. We will rest him for the night and see if he will fly in the morning. If not, UF will take him after 8am. so we will call them. Thank you very much for the help. I’ll let you know.

Thanks and let me know.... If the bird's wings and feet seem to work... Not bleeding, etc.. I like the idea of resting it overnight.... It may just be rattled, scared, over stressed etc..... And they are pretty social birds... Very social for birds of prey..... And looks like a youngster...... Surely born this spring in Florida..... If it can stay local and re unite with its family group in the morning. That would ideal... Because it is going to need the mature birds it travels with to show it the way back to South America in the Fall.

It looks like he got struck in the throat, feathers missing but no major damage. Hopefully he can shake it off. Joe said that he may have just taken in too much water by unfortunately landing in a lake. We will size him up in the morning, if he seems ready to fly we will drive him out closer to where he was picked up. Very aware of how social they are.

As an FYI, FWC has a list of licensed rehabbers on their website, but is difficult to find: link

Have had him perched on a fence post in our pasture for 1 1/2 hours and backed way off to let him relax. Looks like he will be going for a ride to UF shortly. Just wanted that to be last resort.

Probably sooner than later. It needs nourishment pretty soon I’m thinking.

Great job 4ward and family! Is it a swallowtail? Looks way different when not flying. Very young swallowtail. My gut says he just needs more rest but nourishment also. Loading him for a short truck ride to UF now.
