Medical debt is not chosen. If you have a heart attack they are just gonna work you up and send you home with a bill for half a mill.

Sigh* Im gonna catch hell but I don't care. We already pay enough in taxes. We should have universal healthcare. The idea of for profit healthcare seems immoral to me. As much as we do spend on healthcare in this country we are dead last in developed nations for healthcare. That metric alone is appalling. Wayyyy to much waste and scams in the billing of healthcare. As someone who has some of the best if not the best healthcare in the country I know that different classes of people get different care and that is bullshit.

It is always easy to say we should all get something for free... because no one ever bothers to understand the impact of getting something for free. If you want free health care, then you will ruin healthcare. ObamaCare has done huge damage to healthcare, just think how bad if government was in full control.
Are we really dead last in healthcare? If you think there is waste or scams now, I cant wait for the the scams and waste that will come with the government running it. Show me one single thing the government does that is cheaper than the free market? What needs to happen is remove government from health care as much as possible and allow the free market to lower the cost.

It's not "free" it's paid for with taxes. Which we already pay enough of and shoukd have healthcare for it. Medicare is a lot more efficient than our current method of insurance. An insurance company is not in business to get you well they are in the business of making a profit. You do understand in the industrialized first world we rank dead last in healthcare. Dead. Last. Our healthcare is so bloated and expensive because the racket that is the insurance industry spends billions to lobby and find ways NOT to pay your claims. You know what nearly every country above us in healthcare have in common? Care to guess? They are all socialized. If it means having 10 aircraft carriers instead of 11 and a few less F35s for kids, old people, and even young mostly healthy people to not have to choose between eating, paying the mortgage or healthcare I will gladly live with it.

We have members here that have admitted having access to healthcare from their job but opt out of it because it is too expensive.
That person just goes to the ER, gets treated and never sees a bill.
To him, that is free healthcare, but it isn't the hospital has to deal with the expense.
Healthcare is too expensive. It is so expensive because only a subset of our country pay into the system.
A universal plan will allow everyone access to a healthcare provider and share in the expense.
I pay $800 / month for health insurance and still it is cheaper to get my RX using a free app (goodRX). That is insane.
I would be willing to pay more in taxes to have access to a "free" healthcare plan. I am pretty sure it will be less than the $800/month I pay now.
I do not think the government should take over all healthcare, those that want a premium plan with specific doctors should be able to pay for that.
The tax should be universal tax such as a consumption tax. Not tax the rich to pay for everyone's healthcare. A consumption tax will force everyone to pay.

A sales tax for healthcare might be a good idea. Only exempt raw meat and raw vegetables. I agree the government should provide or subsidize a basic healthcare plan like an HMO for everyone. If you want a better plan, you can pay extra. They could start with expanding medicare for those over 50 with premiums to offset the cost, still probably cheaper than you pay now.

I don’t know how old you are but, ask your parents how much your birth in the hospital costs them back in the 1950’s or even the 60’s if you are that old. Ever since the federal government got involved in healthcare and started all the rules and regulations the costs has skyrocketed.

Check with them about infant mortality also.

In 1991, my daughters birth cost $1800. I did not have maternity insurance and had to pay cash. It was $900 for the doctor and $900 for the hospital. The Dr's fee included all prebirth visits to his office.
The more government sticks its nose into the medical industry, the higher and higher the costs go. ObamaCare destroyed the industry... and it is getting worse and worse because of it.
Medicare is a really stupid example to hold out. It is the same as SSI, a huge pyramid scheme that cant stand on the premiums of the participants, so expanding it will only make it worse. Medicare hasnt lowered the cost, it has merely shifted the cost to those that pay their way thru the system.
I just cant believe the people still think the government can do something cheaper than the free market. I guess that is why they have dumbed down education, so they can lie and everyone believes it.
