The citizens that pay the salary and benefits of LEOs should not be able to review their actions? Were these not items items supported by UNIONS? So DeSantis listened to UNIONS and he is still wrong.....? It's also worth knowing that it was passed through the Florida Senate with all Democrats supporting it. ( www.tallahassee.com/story/news/politics/2024/02/15/lawmakers-preliminarily-approve-no-go-zone-around-first-responders/72599576007/ ) Perhaps there are problems with it but to reflexively decide that everything the other side does is wrong is wrong. Another way it could be played is to say that DeSantis caved and signed a Democrat supported bill....... We just can not trust the media. And......got to wonder how the hard Team R players are now thinking about the bill as they know Team D supported it.......I mean they know everything Team D supports is wrong as surly as does a reflexive Team D partisan.

I just remembered, there’s already a Constitutionally mandated panel of citizens who are allowed to investigate public corruption: the Grand Jury. Grand Juries have long standing procedures that goes back to the founding of the country and centuries before. Unlike citizen review boards, they are not a newfangled thing. They’re allowed to investigate almost anything they want and have proper framework to do so. So why not be satisfied with Grand Juries, as opposed to BLM activists on “citizen review boards,” looking into police matters? Because grand juries depend on prosecutors who will hold cops accountable and they clearly haven’t done so. They are on the same team Not really. Prosecutors can’t stop grand juries from investigating or indicting who they want.

Grand juries are comprised of random registered voters, but locked in for a long time in which a relationship is built. It's a one sided affair. I'm just not a fan at all. It's rigged from the jump. In Florida, new grand juries are cycled in every 6 months. Are our citizen review boards” NOT based on relationships? You’re not getting on such a board without the proper political connections.

And if u are placed on a board by liberal woke pro-criminal groups you won’t be neutral.
Take it out of all biased hands left or right. If that is even possible

The bill doesn’t prohibit citizen review boards from looking into anything. It just says they don’t have any authority to dictate how any LE agency’s policy will be made or carried out.
As said, there are already established procedures for addressing both of those things.
This sounds like some people are just wanting to make this bill out to be something that it isn’t.

LEOs are public employees and if they are afraid of a citizen's review panel, it doesn't smell good. I could give you a list a mile long of LEO infractions and crimes. They are subject to the same human flaws as every citizen. I don't know if you still work (retired or not), but how would you like a bunch of folks who hate you and have no experience doing what you do trying to nit-pick your work product. Your posts against LEO show your bias. As said, "The review boards can continue to operate but only in an advisory role that provides input on policies and procedures, not individual officer actions." There will still be review boards and they will maintain the level of transparency. I've been marveling at the headlines about the law stopping Miami Dade from dictating how workers work and their rest times. Makes it sound like D has a vendetta against workers - they are covered under OSHA and well protected from being overworked, if any would do that anyway.

Yes, I still work and have employees and review their work as needed. I paid taxes, therefore I help pay salaries and generous benefits of LEOs so why shouldn't I be able to review their work? They are public employees.

I think he’s still on the VP short list, he’s been doing a good job of keeping himself in the news lately. DeSantis dropped out of the GOP primary, who would want him on their ticket? His just another MTG...... yea and your beloved vice president was first to get out with 1% of the vote. dick

Without due respect, you don't know anything about me. I don't hate Republicans, I dislike individual office holders on both sides.

Not really. Prosecutors can’t stop grand juries from investigating or indicting who they want. Who brings the cases to the grand jury's attention to begin with? Is it not prosecutors or prosecuting authorities? Prosecutors present cases to them but grand juries can also bring their own investigations. Prosecutors stand with them as their legal adviser as they investigate but the prosecutor doesn’t make their decisions for them. The prosecutor’s authority is the avenue by which the grand jury subpoenas witnesses or evidence to look into. The prosecutor does what they command within the bounds laid out in the procedure. Grand jury proceedings are completely secret. All parties are sworn to secrecy and what happens in the proceeding remains under the shroud. Therefore I cannot offer any specific example of a Grand Jury investigating a case. I can only speak to the general procedures. Only an indictment or a no true bill comes out of the proceedings. The reason for this is that it gives the citizen grand jurors freedom to look into what they want without scrutiny or criticism. The origin goes back to old England. Grand juries gave citizens a way to overrule the king in criminal prosecutions at the community level.

Calls with law enforcement can be recorded without their consent, Florida court says
An appeals court ruled the law enforcement officers have no expectation of privacy in their official roles.
GAINESVILLE — A Florida appeals court has effectively opened a loophole in the state’s long-standing law against recording telephone conversations without the permission of both sides of the call, ruling that law enforcement officers performing their official duties can be secretly recorded because they have no expectation of privacy.
The court’s decision — involving a citizen who accused the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office of misconduct — is the latest to provide new mechanisms for civilian oversight of law enforcement, even as others were curtailed in recent days by Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Republican-led Legislature.
