Trumpeting his support of law enforcement, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed bills on Friday that will limit the authority of police civilian review boards and restrict bystanders from getting too close to officers during investigations.
HB 601 bars citizen review boards from investigating allegations of officer misconduct. The review boards can continue to operate but only in an advisory role that provides input on policies and procedures, not individual officer actions.
The other measure (SB 184) creates a 25-foot buffer around police officers, firefighters and emergency personnel when they are working. Bystanders who disregard a verbal warning and approach with an intent to interfere, harass or threaten could be arrested and charged with a misdemeanor.

DeSantis is becoming better and better. He may someday become presidential material.

The citizens that pay the salary and benefits of LEOs should not be able to review their actions?

I think he’s still on the VP short list, he’s been doing a good job of keeping himself in the news lately.

He doesn't govern, he does nothing but seek publicity.

I would think Trump would want someone that could at least deliver a state. Trump “owns” Florida. That makes sense to me. But it seems all on the short list are already in solid red states. Stafonic out of NY, but NY won’t flip red.

He doesn't govern, he does nothing but seek publicity. You are correct. This stupidity will never survive a challenge in court and they know that. It's just a feel good like bussing illegals to NYC... It just fires up the dummies

The citizens that pay the salary and benefits of LEOs should not be able to review their actions? Today is a sad day for me. Everything was great, then I had to like a post from MisterJr. DeSantis is overreaching with his governing and citizens should absolutely be able to review the actions of LEO. I hope I rebound from liking MisterJr post.

Its a good law. It doesn’t eliminate citizen review boards. It makes their duties and qualifications uniform state-wide. They should not be investigating police misconduct. They aren’t qualified to. Their legitimate point is to give a degree of transparency to the community so the community can be aware of police actions that may not make it to the papers. They’re not supposed to be dictating law enforcement policy.

LEOs are public employees and if they are afraid of a citizen's review panel, it doesn't smell good. I could give you a list a mile long of LEO infractions and crimes. They are subject to the same human flaws as every citizen.
