GRU was around today to change out all the meters in this area to smart meters that communicate to GRU directly, eliminating the meter reader.
Technology is taking jobs away.
Only took the young lady 10 seconds to swap out the meter.

Only took the young lady 10 seconds to swap out the meter. I chatted with one of the meter readers, he said the new system created lots of other opportunities and did not seem worried about his job, he was already moving in to a computer QA/QC position. Ours were replaced last year.

Automation eliminates jobs otherwise they wouldn't do it.

Ours were replaced last year. If you chat with him again, or maybe somebody knows the answer. How does the meter communicate? Cellular, wifi, or some other method. I could see wifi where you live. Around me it seems cellular would be the only option. I know older ones were radio waves. Just curious how it works.

Automation eliminates jobs otherwise they wouldn't do it. That and smart meters can allow more precise demand charges. Higher rates if you use power during peak load times. Also faster response to power outages. No waiting on a phone call. Lots of advantages to smart meters.

FPL put them here years ago. They communicate through the power lines. Don't know how but that is how they do it.

Our water meter was replaced recently ... from one auto system to another.
It's just for record keeping and tracking "issues" since every City home is on a flat rate.
The number of bathrooms is the controlling factor.
Gas meters were moved outside a few years ago.
I think they do a "drive-by" to read them.

Clay Electric installed Wi-Fi on the poles back to our place......1.75 miles.......3 Wi-Fi units to carry it that far......and a new meter. It's going to take a while but it'll save them dollars on reading it for sure.

And then there is this odd idea......
Why not, in rural areas, like ours where we have to use a hot spot, not have the Wi-Fi running the meters available for customers to access the internet?
Of course......the fact that I suggested such a thing demonstrates how ignorant I am of technology........

Interesting thought and a good question.

Of course......the fact that I suggested such a thing demonstrates how ignorant I am of technology........ Probably worried about hacking into their system. Plus the bandwidth needed.

In my hood, Gas, Electric and Water are all smart meters in service for about a decade at least.
