Bridge collapse A good explanation of what happened (so far).

It was reported that the ship warned the bridge authority and they closed the toll gates just before the collision. Maybe that prevented a lot more casualties?

That was a horrible accident. You can see vehicles going into the water. They said construction crews were also working on the bridge at the time of the accident.

Passed that bridge many times. It’s going to cause traffic problems for a long time, trucks can’t use the tunnel so all traffic will be diverted to 95 or an alt.

I think the collapse cut off ship traffic to the port also.

A major clusterfuck of monumental proportion.
Not only the tragedy of lives lost but the damage will linger on for years. Diversion of traffic (ships and vehicular), reconstruction and loss of jobs in the port.
It's said Baltimore had one of the largest "drive on and drive off" capabilities on the east coast. I guess Brunswick is already gearing up. Jacksonville too.

Like the skyway in '80 all over again. yep. At least some of the old skyway is usable as a fishing pier and a good place to dip blue crabs. The Maryland bridge is toast.

Wow it appears that entire bridge collapsed. I believe the replacement will result in a better design with deflection bunkers to better protect the supports in the future. Every bridge we have over shipping should be inspected for just such an event. Very tragic for those that perished and as mentioned there’s bound to be supply chain issues for goods going both ways.

I have driven over it countless times. All trucks carrying hazmat has to use it or go way around to the west side. Traffic will be a nightmare for a long time.

Thr Tallulah Bankhead Tunnel in Mobile is like that. No hazardous materials allowed in the tunnel they have to take the long way around the bay

I can’t believe that they haven’t started clearing the wreckage and opening up that port entrance? That port should be opened by this weekend.

I'd guess they are still locating bodies. Also they need to move in some heavy barge/crane rigs to handle the removal. A lot of moving and dangerous parts.

Yes - busy port, very busy area.
I couldn't believe that the whole bridge just dropped into the water.
As stated, the replacement will be much better but we're talking 10 years or so before it gets built...

Hopefully doesn't take that long. Reporter said it only took them a year to rebuild the bridge that collapsed in Minneapolis several years ago. I'm going to guess they are going to put as many resources on getting a new bridge done asap.

They need to move as quickly as they can but its not going be easy.
While this impacts Baltimore it has a bigger impact on the entire east coast.
While I hope it doesn't turn political it looks like it will.
We need bipartisan support on this. It's about our nation and our economy, not about who gets credit.

But in today’s world I’m sure there are lawyers licking their chops and politicians looking to grease their donors wallets. And don’t forget the environmentalist. And it’s a safe bet the name will be changed. 😉

They found 2 of the 6 missing, all were from Mexico or Central America. Road crew filling potholes.

Apparently it took five years to build it the first time. Got to get the channel clear first.
