I am finally getting around to putting rod holders on the barge (poontoon) And the standard ones that are flush mount base won't work without major modifications. Seeing that gives me 3 choices in mounts The kind with the bottom plate and 4 screws and nuts, or the open u type with 2 screws like the scotty #284 or railblaza type Now I just noticed on the other boat that has a Atwood flush mount with a riser it fits a lot tighter and secure than a knock off brand.. so was wondering how mix and match mounts with holders accessories would play well with each other. So are the scotty #284 holders and mounts a solid choice? I only have full access on the gated doors, otherwise the aluminum skin is attached to the top rail, and tight fit on the upholstery.. I did mount a 4 pole holder on the back.. Yes I know it's a "if you have another boat, why don't you just set that one up to fish from?" And I have..but the bride likes putting as well. It does look like there is a mount that has more flexibility..as it grips on 3/4 of the sides and 2 screws..railblaza.. Opinions from folks wo have done this before are much appreciated. The scotty mounts aren't bad. They use em for salmon. I wouldn't use em offshore trolling for big fish w heavy drag, but for general fishing, They are decent.
I was trying to use one for a downrigger mount - just was real rough trying to connect the downrigger to the peg. It would be fine for that - w 6# ball like i use - if I coulda got the peg connected to downrigger base securely. put a 3 inch heavy aluminum angle on after got frustrated.
As for mix n match - i did that with BPS brand and it was like you said, not as snug but it wasn't going anywhere. There's a notch that needs to be lined up to take em out.
For the record, I had side mounts, not to square tubes or flush mounts.

Well, the barge is limited on mount style, Thanks for input. I just want something for light duty, freshwater stuff. It's a barge.. But I still want to be able to have a couple rod holders.. For mainly fishing stuff that's what the nautic star is for. Attachments:

Driftmaster flat bases, instead of clamping, drill and through bolt. If you plan on any trolling make sure you get right and left hand threads for appropriate side of boat.

I think I'll be satisfied with the scotty on the front and rear gates. They mount solid. I have 2 small bait trays coming..to go next to them. Now as far as a mount for the proposed helix 5, the railblaza would seem to be the best fit.. I have a couple mounts and rod holders coming to compare.

Decided on a scotty ball mount for helix 9.. Why.. More secure. I had it but didn't use it on bay boat. I thought this had a lot of merit..
So transducer and parts ordered..
Comparing railblaza to scotty type post, for my use scotty type post. I think I'll like those mini bait boards.. Now for a rod holder or something light they are fine, for a clean mount they are good on 1 or 1 1/4 rail where limited access is a concern. But a little proprietary..
