So I'm getting ready to go deer hunting in Florida for the first time. (Hunted out of state before)
Got my license, got my hunter safety exam certificate, got my deer permit,
Wanted to read over all the state rules and regulations since I'm new here. And I came across this:
"Taking wildlife with any centerfire semi-automatic rifle having a magazine capacity of more than five rounds is prohibited"
It was my intention to go with my m1 garand, which has a "magazine capacity" of 8 rounds. But I obviously want to be in compliance with the law.
I know they make 5 round "hunting clips" for the gun, if I purchased these and only brought those, would I be in compliance with the law? Or would the gun itself still be prohibited?
If it's prohibited that's OK, just gives me an excuse to buy a new hunting rifle.

That's what I was thinking. But I just wanted to double check. I know firearms laws can be weird

But also make sure to check the regulation specific to the area you want to hunt. Note that some do not allow centerfire at all.

Each WMA, WCA, PUA, and Forest usually has its own area specific rules. Read up on the area you plan on hunting and know before you go, but if rifles are allowed you will need 5 or less round magazines.

Also to be clear does that mean I'm good with a 5 round clip, if the magazine would still normally chamber 8?

WMA Finder Linksee link above As long as the clip you use in your M1 for deer hunting can only hold 5 rounds, you are legal. Make sure you are not using full metal jacket bullets, they are not legal for deer hunting. Soft point, open tip match, plastic tip are all ok to use.

Ps.... You can use the 8 round clip for hog hunting..... Don't do this...I was wrong...use the 5 round clip instead

I thought it was a 4 round mag and 1 in chamber for 5 total. A five round clip would be 6 correct? Or did I read it wrong?

I don’t think clip and magazine are technically the same thing, but the recommended 5-round clip should be viewed the same as a plugged magazine on a shotgun.
