Sorry I missed this earlier... My best suggestion is to take a look at the Blackwater River (launching out of the Collier-Seminole State Park) - just before the turn-off down to Goodland, about 14 miles to the west of S.R.29 - the turn-off for Everglades City. That river is ideal for small tarpon and lots of snook - but you'll be doing a bit of paddling to get to creeks and bends that hold the tarpon. Very sheltered waters, but you can only access the Park after 8Am each day...
Good luck and post up how it goes...

Well Bob, I appreciate the advice, but I struck out. It's a beautiful place and I enjoyed the paddle. I only went down about 2 miles so maybe I should have spent more time there. I'll try it again next time.

I've fished the lower half of that river and found lots of snook (small right now...). I suspect that the tarpon (every size) will be there in May - then all summer long if you can stand the conditions (skeeters, heat, not a breath of wind, nasty lightning storms around noon each day...). Last night we were jumping tarpon in the 20 to 50lb range over here in Biscayne Bay -and my anglers got taken to school on each and every one, tossing flies and lures at fish they were looking at in bridge shadows and docklights between Miami and Miami Beach...
