I have never killed a buck in velvet. Was surprised to see this one this morning.

WTG! All buck up here are still in velvet. Fawns are still small with spots. seems early. The buck ive seen on my property have been hangin w the herd and other males still. Boy, he looks alot like the 5 pointer i see around here. They smell Autumn in the air.

Congrats! Is there a story? Good eats ahead. He showed up on camera the day before I shot him. Came in with a spike in the morning about 30 minutes after first light. Shot him at 32 yards. Ran about 55 yards and piled up. Great blood trail, easy to follow.

Way to go Doc! Have you looked into preserving the velvet? I know they have sprays for it but that's where my knowledge stops

Doc it is probably too late, but, go to Van Dykes or Mckenzie taxidermy supply and get some velvet preserve spray. That's the easiest and best way. You can also soak them in alcohol and then a borax solution. Repeat twice. You want to kill bacteria and dry them or they will rot. Some people have had good luck freeze drying them after that process.
How good they turn out has alot to do with how it was handled in the field but the bottom line is getting them dried and bacteria free.
I'm sure there are other methods but this worked for my dad decades ago, along with formaldehyde, when he would do some taxidermy work on the side.

Shot one in velvet a decade ago. All I did was put rack in a pillow case filled with borax. Place in a non frost free freezer for a month or two. Mine is still perfect!
