I agree completely, Owens- Illinois were great stewards of the land compared to Weyerhauser. They would mechanically clear the land and make long windrows(debris piles) which grew up into great deer habitat, feed and bedding.

Hancock bought out plum creek in our area ( not sure if they are part of Weyerhaeuser?).
They sold quite a few small parcels in our clubs and have been a pia to deal with.

I apologize as I looked through it but didn't see detailed info therein. I wonder if they are proving the tools and a budget or if they expect the service provided to cover all costs in exchange for hunting opportunities. Not so good an opportunity if the latter.

My wife and I did the exotic species survey on Barr, some great habitats for sure.

Looks like Barr Hammock hunt area doesnt include the wetland areas. And dang! This Lochloosa piece you have to maintain the non-huntable area while only getting to hunt the 106 acres?

I don't know about now, but the west end of that tract was hunted 3 yrs ago. When I hunted Grove Park we called that tract Wards because that was the name of the guys allowed to hunt there. In fact just south of it is where I drove up on the naked hiker, I think he thought he was on the county piece.

If I was young, single, and lived there, but also had means to have the equipment, it might be a fun way to keep myself in the woods year-round. But I don’t see myself driving an hour to pull weeds at the beck and call of the county manager.
Could you imagine being handed a map of invasive vegetation on opening weekend and being told you got X amount of time to go pull or spray these weeds and shrubs?

We killed a BUNCH of pigs out there 15+ years ago. Still a few around, occasionally the boys bring one home. Bordering private land. The good deer are just north.

I've had people on cam, on several different days, in the past few weeks walking the woods in orange reflective vests, hard hats, and carrying iPads. I am concern as to what this portends.

Hopefully just a timber cruise. I remember one year in Grove Park some one left a note at a common parking area raising hell about all the ribbon left there. He stated that he was hunting this spot and had so for years and didn't appreciate so many people encroaching in "his" spot. I'll give him credit he did leave a phone number so I called and explained that he wasn't the only hunting there. After talking to him everything was cool, that he was upset about all the ribbon hung up. I agreed with him that ribbons hung everywhere sucked. I did a little walk about to see where all ribbon was headed and it ended up being in a square. I called the guy and told him to relax that it wasn't a hunter putting out the ribbon, just the timber company doing a cruise. It ended up being a clear cut a couple of years later

After the above post , I got to thinking it could be an environmental cruise for gopher tortoise mitigation, especially if it is on high sandy soil. They put one in years ago on the south side of the River Styx road. If that's the case it's a good thing. It will affect how that piece of property is managed, think no herbicides and select timber cutting.

Probably doing a timber cruise to measure stand growth. Edit: I see cracker beat me to the response. Tortoise areas do receive herbicide, but only to control invasive vegetation. A god thing.

I was referring to the blanket herbicide use that most timber companies use today.

Could be a timber cruise, but I've never seen this type of activity before. I doubt it has anything to do with gopher tortoises due to the type of area it is.
