Started off with the idea of catching a few more whiting for ceviche and some boiling in oil. Basic stuff.......fishfinder and shrimp pieces. Worked out well enough, though, as is the norm, once the tide slowed catfish and stingrays became a issue. So.....while the tide was low the castnet was employed for a few minutes around a sand bar at the mouth of a creek. Had about 6 dozen mixed baits, mud minnows, killies, seabream....or silversides if you like......and a couple of pinfish. Almost all on the small size, small enough to where we changed out our hooks to 1/0 Kahle. Took about 2 1/2 hours to go through all of them.....and some more of the shrimp. And.....some of them got stuck back on the hook dead after they were spit up by fish. About 30 mangroves, only 5 of which made the grade. A couple of lanes, a few jacks and ladyfish, one small red and a couple of seabass. Ceviche for dinner tonight and tomorrow. And Saturday......fried whiting.....

Awesome! Mangroves are on my list, I've never caught one. When we were kids....50 years ago!!.....not nearly so many as now. We can even catch a limit south of Jacksonville in the river at times.

They are a nuisance w gazillions around under legal size. Like piranha for shrimp. We mainly use finger mullet slices for bait.

They are a nuisance w gazillions around under legal size. Like piranha for shrimp. We mainly use finger mullet slices for bait. Generally we find that shifting to small fish of some sort, pinfish, croakers, mud minnow, silver sides, etc. improves the overall size of the snappers. And it deters the pinfish and the like........ Just finished off the second batch of ceviche......tomorrow night....fried whiting........!!!

I like it when the young mullet are about the size of my pinky. Toss em up near a dock and let the hoards attack. When one swallows it, usually a keeper 10-inch plus fish. Mainly do this stuff w wife. Fun to watch em attack.

Part of the secret to catching mangrove snapper is to hook’em just before you feel them😉

Awesome! Mangroves are on my list, I've never caught one. Really? I thought everyone who had fished in salt water in Florida had caught a mango or so. They're my favorite snapper. Plenty of them around, both inshore and offshore, they fight hard especially the ones over a pound or so, and dang good just about any way you cook them. Get some live shrimp and a light spinner with a few weights and fish around pilings and rock piles and you'll catch them. You might have to go through a bunch of shrimp to get a legal one though.

Of the 5 mangos we caught, I caught 3 and the biggest was about 8 pounds? at 28 or 29 inches or more. One got me on the finger while I was rearranging the cooler, I had spiked it, but not successfully I guess. I was using 5 or 6 inch grunts.
