Exactly! If you don't have tinitis, you and I can turn stuff off and sit in true quiet.
I grew up deaf have worn hearing aids since started pre-school, about 5-6 yrs old. Never heard the birds (even with wearing hearing aids) til in my 30s and got a pair of digital hearing aids. Asked my wife what all the noise was and she said birds!
Have no idea how folks can handle that stuff.
Also interesting how people can hear in 3-D. I can't - hear whatever the prominent sound/voice is and that's it. Music must be beautiful in it's entirety with the various layers.

One of the most irritating sounds to me is the exhaust fan on the microwave. The Mrs thinks it’s hilarious but I don’t know how people can handle some of the “new” sounds I’m hearing.

My hearing isn't that bad but I can see hearing aids coming in the future. I've got tinnitus and about a 20% high frequency loss

Exactly - how do they filter that stuff and stay sane? funny story - we were at my mom's and wife says mouse on the floor. I called BS and she said turn your light on that way. Turn it on there is the mouse looking at me. WTH? She said she could hear the carpet catching on it's toenails. OMG! Some folks hear EVERYTHING. I have no grasp on that. Plus used to catch a lot of shit growing up and carried into work, guess it is something that will always be. Got the guy with 1 leg mocking deafness but you can't mock him cause that would be mean. LoL!

My hearing isn't that bad but I can see hearing aids coming in the future. I've got tinnitus and about a 20% high frequency loss That tinnitus can be very bad. A good friend was a door gunner on a helicopter in Vietnam. He got it bad from the firing noise. VA could do nothing for him. He explained to me that it was constant and sometimes like a roar. Really messed him up bad.

Really messed him up bad. He needs to see someone about tinnitus therapy. About 10 years after coming back from nam, it was driving me nuts. (stationed on a FSB) Got with an audiologist who introduced me to a therapist who showed you ways to diminish your ear's acknowledgement of the signals. I've been relatively free of disturbances for 20-30 years. About the only time I'm aware of it is when someone brings it up and then it fires off bigtime. It's doing it right now. It'll pass in an hour or so once I get off this topic. You just have to learn not to focus on it and move your attention to other items. It's not for everybody but it seems to work for some of us.

I must have brought him to Hines 20 times. He got married a few years ago and hardly ever comes out of the house anymore. He has a lot more Nam problems than just the tinnitus. He is one of those that survived but was actually lost in Vietnam. Too many of my friends and relatives were lost there.
Thank you Robert for your service and sacrifice.

Being around loud music has definitely diminished my hearing. I have to be careful after playing and or attending shows. Occasionally I get a slight ringing in my ears and that's when I give them a break.

Occasionally I get a slight ringing in my ears and that's when I give them a break. My hearing aid guy sells hearing protection for loud music - bands, etc. I think it is the lower end of the hearing aids - top end would be sound enhancement, but they do shut off when too loud or uncomfortable. Think he sells the shut-off capability for bands and others who are in loud music all the time. For example - if we are to see the grandkids and the little girls get to squealing, my hearing aids shut that down. Or at a restaurant and guy drops a plate right behind me - shuts down the loud part. Even a gun shot is shut down, but the hearing aids themselves don't provide as much quiet as a pair of baffled ear plugs or muffs.

I've been hard of hearing most of my life. I think it somewhat affected my learning in early school years. My baby daughter has speech apraxia. And other apraxias. I know it's so frustrating for her because I don't hear as well as her mom and brother and sisters. They know what she is usually trying to say but I have to ask her to repeat herself often. I'm very thankful that kids ate in some ways lot nicer than they were 30 years ago and most genuinely want to include her even though speech is difficult for her sometimes.

I lost 90% of the hearing in my left ear from a viral infection when I was 30, and hearing aids don't work for my type of hearing problem. From that day forward I've had tinitus in that ear. You get used to it after a while, and there are a few advantages. For instance, I sleep on my good ear, so instead of being a light sleeper, I sleep much better now. Also, I can ignore my GF when I want to and just blame my hearing (shhhh, nobody tell her).
My GF's hearing has been going bad for the past few years. She finally got hearing aids and they have been a godsend (when she wears them lol).
I'm glad you got your hearing aids and get to experience sounds.

I don't remember what percentage I've loss, but it is more than 50%. I've spent a lifetime of working on load construction sites, but most of mine went away during two years of working at a gun club. Standing next to people while they are shooting shotguns on the trap and skeet fields while not wearing ear protection (mid 70's noone wore any kind or eye or ear protection) got mine messed up quickly.

VA provided him with hearing aids that work with his phone, they transmit a noise canceling sound that mask the tinnitus. He couldn't sleep or think straight before the hearing aids. Took a while to convince them but in the end he got them and they work. I have it too my is from airboats and mechanical air conditioning equipment. I figured it out early enough that I started wearing ear protection soon enough that it isn't the keep me awake kind. But it is always there.

Ah yes...the cicadas that live in my head 😖
I also have the high frequency loss, birds, bells, all that stuff is out of my range now. Like some said if you can "forget" about it at times, it helps. Just reading this thread has awakened all 687,463 cicadas and all are screeching at full volume 🤯

I get it occassionally. But it fades out after a few minutes. Thankfully!
Motorcycles, lawnmowers, chain saws, tractors, power tools, sawmills, rock concerts, and car races. That's what messed up my hearing.
I was in my mid thirties before I started wearing ear protection.

Last year Turkey hunting someone was texting me about gobbles they could hear PAST me that I couldnt hear even with hear enhancements.

My wife has the super hearing also. I was in the bathroom talking to my dentist just now. When I got out she already told “Alexa” to remind me of the appointment. She hears through doors and walls I don’t know if that’s good or bad. 🤷♂️

My deafness probably saved me from developing tinnitus.
I used to shoot all of the time without ear protection. Since I couldn’t hear anything I could not hear the blasts.
However one time I was shooting a 44 mag for several hours and I got physically ill from either the noise or the recoil. Never happened again. It was outside on the farm. I never figured it out.

I get like that running a chainsaw for long periods of time. Get stressed, even with hearing protection.

Try one before you comment. I've had several. Was with the last one for 20 years. Married for 12 of those years. You get a hold of a crazy wild one?

Dated several redheads when I was younger. Now that you mention it they were “different”

The country with the highest per capita population of Redheads is Ireland.
The country with the highest per capita incidence of schizophrenia is ... Ireland.
A genetic linkage between the two is highly probable.
Does that help explain the situation?
