I got caught in the worst sea fog close to Horseshoe Beach one time. I wouldn't say I was lost because I was in a block of woods surrounded by roads. I couldn't see but a few feet in front of me and had no idea which way to go. I just kept walking until I came out on a road. When I did I wasn't sure which way to walk down the road. I made the right decision and made it back to my truck right before dark.

I was about 10-12 years old when we were gigging flounder at Wakulla beach. My Father, my uncle and me dragging a 12 ft jon boat around the oyster beds. The fog came in so thick you could not see the light house at Saint Marks. Sitting in a boat between two drunks arguing over which way was North. Finally waded ashore about 4 am 30 feet from the truck.

Got lost north of ONF. Shot a big hog. Blood trailed it and it got dark, real dark. No moon, couldn’t see your hand in front of your face. Blood finally lead into some thick brush. Guess what , hog wasn’t dead and was pretty angry. I ran like hell but as I was running my headlamp fell off. Now I’m running from a wounded hog in the pitch black.
After escaping what I thought to be certain death I realized I’d had gotten completely turned around. I fumbled through my bag and got out my cell phone. Turned the flash light on and realized phone was about to die, and it did. Now I’m lost in the woods with no phone.
After about an hour of slowly walking with my arms out stretched in front of me I ran into a fence. Fence put me on a management area road but I didn’t know which road it was. I sat down in the middle of that road and wrapped my head around the thought of it might be better just to wait it out. Wife would have called cops if I wasn’t home by a certain time. But thanks to a semi driving down 19 and hitting his engine brake I knew were I was.
I headed towards the noise and stumbled out onto 19. Not a lot of cars on 19 at 10 at night. And the ones that do pass ain’t picking somebody up with a gun over his shoulder. I eventually made it to the entrance of the management area. There are some houses at the entrance and just my luck they were coming home. I explained my situation and they let me call my wife. As I’m waiting at the entrance for my wife an FWC officer just happened to be driving home on 19 from some conference. I explain to him what happened and he was nice enough to drive me back to my truck.
I learned a lot that day. The entire situation could have been avoided if I was properly prepared. I carry backups for my backups now.

Back 10 years or so, we were camped at Hitchcock Lake in the ANF for opening of squirrel season. Mack lake camp is north and across the Ochlocknee River. We would take a boat and hunt the island in between.
I am hunting mid-morning when I come up on a feller with a little girl about 10 years old. He asks me how to get back to Mack Lake camp. I explained he could follow me to my boat, and I could take them there. He got lost again trying to get to where I was and heard him hollering as he faded in the distance.
Back at camp fixin supper we could hear him hollering now and again. A truck with two ladies pulls into camp. and asks had we seen a man and a little girl. We replied that we had and in fact could hear him now. One lady asks could we go get him and bring him back to camp so she could kill him. I told one of the crew about where he sounded like he was and a couple of them went and got them and brought them back to camp and they hugged on the little girl and told dummy to get in the back of the truck.
My boys told me had to be dumber than a box of rocks. Seems he had waded the slough and walked through planted pines till he found a paved road and went back in the swamp thinking there must be a paved road on this island.

Hunted a stand about 3/4 of a mile from truck in Oceola WMA. This was all before google earth and GPS. I just knew there had to be an easier way to get to stand. SO after hunting one morning I decided to scout a new way in. Never been so lost in my life! About 6 pm and getting dark I finally hit a road. I was unprepared planned on a simple morning hunt, no food or water. Bug spray ran out. So now i am getting eaten alive. Walked a mile down road before walking back. No idea which way to go. Started to get mind ready that it was going to be a long night! Now when I tell you angels come in strange packages it is true. About 8pm I see headlights coming to me. Two older gents headed back to camp. THey picked me up and asked where my truck was. I said off road 233. Its a long road. They drove me around for an hour looking for truck. When found the tire was flat on my truck. Guys just happened to have a propane tank filled with air for just such an emergency. Those are my angels!
