You can grow pineapple in Florida? Yes, been doing it for decades at my home in Sarasota. Just plant the top from store bought fruit and wait two full years. As mentioned above, some of the best tasting I've had comes from my yard, but I do leave mine in the ground until what you see in the photos, so I do lose the occasional ripe fruit to animals that beat me to it. I probably have in excess of two dozen plants in various areas of my "flower bed".

The most important thing: never on the top of pizza!!!

Here are a few of today's crop, although two of the three were a bit stunted. Cleaned up for a nice sized gallon bag, and the smaller bag is the core of the pineapple which I like to gnaw on. We currently have 4 going strong. Three are getting close to picking. They're only surpassed in flavor by the freshly cut pineapples we used to get in Hawaii. We ate those things like giant corn on the cobb when I was killing swordfish and tunas over there.

Long before Hawaii was a state, the Florida Keys were the biggest pineapple producer in the United States. I just like to throw out tidbits now and then. Google Benjamin Baker and pineapples and you can read about it. BTW he was a relative of mine.

Best pineapple I’ve ever eaten we pulled over at one of the plantations on the north shore on the way to surf. I rarely eat store bought because of the taste. And to Balla’s point never on pizza, that’s just not right.

I live on Plantation Key ... it was named that because it had pineapple plantations on it.

That’s really cool. The most important thing: never on the top of pizza!!! That's true in Italy. But in the good ole USA there is no telling what is going to be put in or on a pizza. It may have a rutabaga crust with horseradish sauce, smoked rhubarb with bean sausage and Velveeta.

Tarpon65 do you fertilize your pineapples? I have about 8 ripening and was curious as several are on the small side.

There was quite the Schooner Trade between the Keys , 10 thousand Islands and points North back in the day. Sugarcane , Pineapples , Coconuts..what ever they could grow. I lived in the Ten Thousand Islands for a number of years and you can still see the coquina stone water cisterns and what use to be cleared mangrove swamp farm areas. Hard times for Crackers for sure.
